When I think of Martin Luther King Day, I think about community, as Martin Luther King Day is the only federal holiday dedicated to volunteerism. The idea behind the National Day of Service is that citizenship requires active participation in our communities. At HHS, our goal is to provide all students with opportunities to practice being active citizens in our school community–whether that is being on Council, helping run our compost program, or serving on a committee. I am hopeful as a school that we can work with each student to find a way for them to be an active member of our school community with the goal that they will become active community members beyond our walls. Take some time with your student to see what opportunities there are in our greater community whether they be with Aging in Place, The Haven, Listen, Youth-In-Action, or an organization or community your family belongs to. If we all find small ways to participate we will all be better off as a community.
Enjoy the long weekend!
Julie Stevenson

Sophomore Meetings
Dear sophomore families, your child's counselor has sent emails inviting you and your 10th grade student for a sophomore meeting. As the midway point of sophomore year approaches, it is helpful to meet with students and families in order to preview the upcoming years of high school. Questions? Please contact your child's counselor.
Talk sponsored by the HHS Environmental Club
The HHS Environmental Club invites you to a talk by Spencer Hardy, a class of 2012 Hanover High graduate and staff biologist at the Vermont Center for Ecostudies in Norwich. Spencer will be sharing results from the Vermont Wild Bee Survey, as well as providing an overview of the incredible native bee diversity in the region. So far more than 350 species have been documented in Vermont, though new species are still being found regularly, including some that may be new to science. The talk will conclude with a discussion of what we as individuals can do to ease some of the many pressures challenging our wild bees population.
