Extended Learning Opportunities
Extended Learning Opportunities(ELO) are about “outside-of-the-box” learning. They are student-designed and student-driven. ELOs provide a flexible learning environment by utilizing the community as an extension of the classroom. High school students can earn elective credits and develop important transferable skills through a variety of experiences, including independent studies, community service, internships, career exploration, learning assistantships, and work-based learning.
We believe these student-led experiences greatly enhance our students’ education by providing learning opportunities that could not occur within the classroom. For each of these experiences, a student’s placement and learning plan is individually tailored to meet that student’s academic and/or career goals and comply with state and federal laws. ELO experiences are typically one semester in length, include frequent reflection, career exploration activities, and culminate with a product and a public presentation of learning. Success within the ELO program necessitates that students work both independently and in collaboration with teachers and community partners. Credit will be granted on a ‘pass/no credit’ basis, is not weighted, and therefore, does not count towards honor roll or GPA.
